About Us

Union Square Chiropractic, estabilshed 1989

Dr. Jacalyn Buettner founded her practice in the 450 Sutter Street medical building in 1989 because of the convenience of the location for patients working in the financial district. Since then the building has undergone numerous renovations including the recent exterior restoration, which included the installation of brand new windows.

Union Square Chiropractic has grown a great deal since its beginnings, though it has maintained the personalized boutique atmosphere that Dr. Buettner first created. We now offer Massage Therapy and will soon be integrating Physical Therapy into our treatment programs. Even with these additions, we strive to treat all our patients at their scheduled time as we appreciate the importance of punctuality for our busy clientele.

Doctor of Chiropractic

Jacalyn G. Buettner, D.C.

Dr. Buettner became interested in chiropractic after sustaining a back injury when she was 13 years old. After many years of being told by medical doctors and physical therapists to take medications, do exercises, and learn to live with the pain, she met a chiropractor, Dr. Jon Blossom, who offered her an alternative solution. Chiropractic helped her so much she knew she wanted to help others the way Dr. Blossom helped her.

This began her journey—she graduated cum laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in March 1985. Having grown up in a small town in Ohio, Dr. Buettner realized her childhood dream of being a big city career girl, like Mary Tyler Moore, when she opened her office at 450 Sutter, the prestigious medical dental building in the heart of Union Square.

With more than 24 years of hands-on clinical experience, Dr. Buettner has the ability to tune into a person’s body, locate where the nerve energy is blocked and restore the energy flow through gentle treatment customized to the individual's needs. This process is similar to turning the power on—a way of activating the body’s innate healing potential to bring back a state of balance.

Certified Massage Therapists

James Power, CMT

James has been working as a CMT in the Bay Area since 1997. From Ireland, he studied at the World School of Massage in San Francisco and the Institute of Conscious Bodywork in San Anselmo. He also studied Eastern approaches to massage in Thailand.

James holds advanced certifications in Holistic Massage Therapy and Advanced Massage Therapy, as well as being a certified Holistic Health Counselor. He has had extensive training and is an expert in Neuromuscular Re-Education. This advanced form of therapy blends well with other bodywork styles and is the perfect adjunct to Chiropractic, physical therapy and sports injury rehabilitation. He blends his education and experience to design the right bodywork approach for each individual.

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays (8 AM - 2 PM)

Clayton Acklin, CMT

Clay has been a CMT for 12 years. He hails from Dallas, studied at the Asten Center of Therapeutics in Richardson, Texas—one of the leading massage schools in the state. Upon graduation, he immediately started his own private practice. He eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue advanced training in deep tissue and trigger point massage, expanding his knowledge of massage and bodywork approaches. During that time, he worked with an exclusive clientele.

He now resides in Sonoma County. Since moving to the Bay Area seven years ago, he has built a very successful practice in San Francisco and the North Bay. Clay's expertise is in using a combination of modalities, including Deep Tissue, Acupressure, Trigger Point and Swedish massage.

Schedule: Wednesdays (Noon - 6 PM) and Fridays (9 AM - Noon)

Heatherly Stankey, CMT

Heatherly has been a CMT for 8 years. Her primary focus is Swedish massage with other modalities such as Acupressure, Trigger Point, Reflexology, Prenatal, and Vibrational Healing Massage, blending in to suit each individual client’s needs. Vibrational Therapy involves stretching muscles and working with joints to free up stored tension in the body. The stretches support clients in having a deep and conscious connection with their body.

She studied at the World School of Massage and Holistic Healing Arts in San Francisco. For the past six years Heatherly has also been working as an instructor at the World School. She teaches Swedish massage, Anatomy and Physiology, Flower Essences, Affirmation Design, and Holistic Business Skills.

Schedule: Mondays (2 PM - 6 PM)
